There are many components involved in roofing projects. Some are more obvious than others, but each plays an important part of the structure and the waterproofing. Fascias and soffits help to protect the roof space from water ingress and moisture build-up and are vital to the integrity of the entire roof over the long term.
Let’s take a look at the fascia and the soffit more closely:
What are fascia’s and what do they do?
The word Fascia in construction terms comes from the Latin for ‘bandage’, ‘bond’ or ‘ribbon’. In medical terminology it is a type of collagen tissue that forms connections within the body to separate muscles and organs. In roofing, these terms explain the use of fascia boards well, as they keep the structure together, but also separate them where they need to be apart.
Often fascias are installed for aesthetic value, as they neaten and complete around the building. Located typically below the gutter line, the fascia board can be used for securely fixing gutters. Once installed, the fascia forms a protective barrier for the roof timbers against water ingress.
Fascia boards come in a range of materials:
- Wood
- Metal
- Fibreboard
- Cement
- uPVC
uPVC is one of the most preferred materials for fascia boards due to a better resistance to rot and therefore giving the detailing a longer lifespan.
What is a soffit and how is it used?
Soffit is a French term with a literal meaning of ‘underneath’. It plays an important role in the ventilation of the roof space, which in turn reduces condensation or other moisture build up. It is not consigned entirely to the roof, as it can be installed at porch entrances and over staircases to prevent rot.
Installing soffits can also improve the energy efficiency of your roofing by controlling the levels of warm and cold air during the seasons.
